Having a Yarn

Over the last 2 days our students have gone from knitting novices to knitting dojos. They have worked on creating their stuffed knitted rabbit, embellished it with features, scarves, bows and flowers. They have learnt the importance of resilience by the bucket load. We now have a ‘warren’ of knitted rabbits. Not only have they knitted for themselves, but have taught several members of staff too – even Mr Deighan! Today saw the arrival of 3 beautiful wooden spinning wheels. All the girls had a go and produced their own spun yarn with sheep fleece. Tomorrow sees the girls learning the art of crochet and creating their own personalised knitted badges. The girls take their knitting home each evening to carry on – it’s great for occupying some time, doing whilst the TV is on or just as a way of relaxing. There are rumours of  a new after school club for September – now they have started they don’t want to stop – keep calm and knit!

Salamanca kayakingHello all from sunny Salamanca!

Day 2 (Monday 13th July) – Sepúlveda (historic town) and river kayaking

Another long day. Stop one – an historic small town called “Sepúlveda”  in the famous region of Segovia. The place where the Portuguese won the battle for independence from Spain back in 1111 and the only time Napolean set foot on Spanish soil and lost!

Fauve Penketh “Lovely scenery and lots of history.”

Mr O´Brien “As a history teacher, I have thoroughly enjoyed the information that our guides have shared with us, even if it was largely in Spanish. Thanks to the students, I have been kept in the know!”
Next we went for a spot of “river kayaking”. A fantastic active day kayaking in pairs down the river to a lagoon where we paused for a spot of swimming and relaxing.
Ryan Penfold, “The competition to see who could row the fastest was obviously won by me! I particularly enjoyed soaking the teachers along the way.”Patrick McKoen, “Fun in the sun with breath-taking scenery.”
Georgia Bailey, “Kayaking was far more fun than I originally thought with a great team guiding us along the way.”
Jack Milne “One of the most fun and enjoyable experiences I have ever had!”
.
Day 3 – Tuesday 14th July

Another long but action packed day!

Spanish lessons

All pupils are put into small groups of between 8-12 pupils with native Spanish speakers. All lessons are entirely in Spanish and all pupils have a booklet with GCSE activities.

Marina Reid-Martin, “Everyone is involved, the classroom is a relaxed, friendly environment. The classes are also really interactive.”

Poppy Harrison, “The teachers are really supportive and encourage you to speak Spanish.”
Isobel Gosney, “I am actually starting to THINK in Spanish!”
Ryan Sparham O´Reilly, “The classes are very entertaining and fun.”

Afternoon by the pool

A spot of relaxing in an outdoor pool. The afternoon is the hottest part of the day. Uninterrupted sunshine with highs of 38 degrees! Lots of hats, sunglasses and high factor suntan lotion washed down with an array of local ice creams and bottles of water.
Erin Nelson, “Nice to cool down under the heat of the sun.”
Isobel Gosney, “Lovely atmosphere, everyone was happy. We all had a great time.”
Tour of the city
Split into two groups, a guided tour of the old city of Salamanca was in store. The pupils were blown away by breath taking views of cathedrals. churches and narrow cobbled streets. The roman architecture was stunning. Again all in Spanish, the pupils had a brief taste of Spanish culture and history.
Lauren Ford “Salamanca is really pretty and interesting”.
Martha Cain “It has been really interesting finding out about the history of the old city”.
Tapas tour
After a small bit of free time in the beautiful “Plaza mayor”, the pupils enjoyed a quick tour of several traditional Spanish bars to sample an array of small tapas. Everyone was left full and content as the local waiters served us “tortilla, chorizo, pan tostado, ribs, huevos rotos, and a local drink of grape juice to wash it all down”. We finished the night taking in romantic sights of the main square with an ice cream in had. Simply unforgettable.
Angus Mackinnon, “My favourite part of the trip so far has been the TAPAS TOUR. I have tried lots of new flavours and tastes and I was left full and happy.”
Megan Ringrose, “I loved trying new foods.”
Joshua Knight-Patterson, “Que delicioso!”

Varndean is delighted to report a substantial increase of 10% in our 5 A*- C (inc English and maths). The provisional figure is 58%.

There has been a substantial increase in the amount of progress that students make, especially those making 4 and 5 levels of progress – well above the national average.

In many significant categories, Varndean’s results this year have been the best ever – and continue the upward trend in the school’s results that we have seen over the last five years.

Some highlights include:

67.5% of students entered achieved the EBacc qualification – the school’s best-ever result.

More than a quarter of all GCSE results are A*-A (26%) and nearly half of all grades were A*-B (47%). This also represents the schools best-ever result.

139 students achieved at least 8 passes graded A*-C.

Headteacher Mr. William Deighan said, “The results this year have been fantastic and in many aspects represent the highest ever results for the school. We are thrilled for the students and for their teachers, who have worked so hard to achieve these outcomes. The work we do within the citywide Secondary School Partnership (SSP) and Challenge Partners continues to be a positive force in raising standards at Varndean School and across Brighton & Hove.”

It is with great sadness that we remember former students Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt who died tragically at the weekend in the Shoreham Air Show crash. They left Varndean School in 2008 and are fondly remembered by staff as considerate and kind young men. Jacob’s father, Bob Schilt, was a teacher at the school from 1989-2009 and is remembered affectionately by staff who knew him. Our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of the two young men at this very sad time.

Welcome to the Autumn term! We hope you all had an enjoyable summer break and our students are feeling refreshed and ready for the new academic year.

As well as bringing joy the summer also brought some extremely sad news to us all locally and especially here at Varndean School. As you are aware two former students, Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, tragically died in the Shoreham Air-crash and are fondly remembered by many staff, students and alumni. This week we learnt of the passing of Mr Kemp. Mr. Deighan and Mr. Dee, Chair of Governors, have enclosed below a letter about the recent tragic news of teacher Mr. Kemp.

Dear Varndean families,

We write with great sadness today to inform you that one of our teachers, Mr. Andrew Kemp, passed away on Monday this week. He was on holiday in Bulgaria at the time. His mum and dad, Carol and Douglas, and sister Sharon are in the process of bringing Andrew home. We offer our most sincere condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Andrew taught in the Technology and Art departments for more than twenty years. He was an incredibly hard working and gifted teacher. Generations of students have benefited from his quiet and gentle wisdom. Colleagues will remember him for his humour, his dedication and kindness. He will be missed by students and staff both past and present.

Mr. Kemp was a free spirit whose spirit is now free – we wish him well on his journey.

William Deighan        Jon Dee
Headteacher              Chair of Governors
From Monday there will be a books of condolences open in our reception. Should you wish to pass on your wishes to their families please do call in next week, or if unable to do this you may email your respects to us rememberingjacob@varndean.co.uk, rememberingmatt@varndean.co.uk and rememberingandrew@varndean.co.uk

With fond memories forever in our hearts we look forward to the future and what opportunities this new year will bring to our school community. We have once again seen some truly fantastic exam results and hope this serves as inspiration for all our students. Our new student leadership team are super keen to get started and are in school a day early today to help welcome the new Year 7 students as they embark on their journey with us. The Year 7s will be venturing into our new specialist schools to develop their talents and interests in the specialist Schools of Discovery, Expression, Creativity and Leadership.

As well as welcoming new students this September we are delighted to be soon launching our brand new website. This is in addition to the new Varndean View system for parents and students (which replaces Parent Portal). Log in details for this will be emailed to you shortly. Should you need any help or guidance in using the system please see the video tutorial which will be on our website soon. There will also be an evening arranged for later this term for parents and carers to come into school for more detailed guidance, should you need this.

British gymnastics logoAfter working hard in her gymnastics rhythmic group and qualifying at elite level, Year 8 student Bella Deane recently went to the British Gymnastics Championships the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Competing against the best groups in the country they managed to win the competition and are the new Junior British Champions! Next step – European competitions and who knows…

iStar Academy also has a dance squad and after competing in London earlier in the year Bella’s group was invited to dance at the World Dance Championships in New York. They went on to come second in their category against another 20 groups. The trophy was taller than Bella and had to have it’s own first class bed on the way home!

Year 11 Making the Grade 17th September

examsWe would like to invite you and your child to Varndean School’s first ‘Making the Grade’ evening of the year. The evening will provide an opportunity to hear from departments, to find out about the upcoming exams, get advice on successful revision tips and to receive guidance on how to work with your child at home during the revision process and to learn about key dates for Year 11. We have arranged representatives from the local colleges to attend and support with the application process and to answer any questions you have. Sessions will allow you and your child to start to think about the importance of the year ahead and how the school can support you and your child in making crucial learning choices for GCSEs and Post-16.

Year 11 can be an extremely daunting and pressurised year in a child’s school life and at Varndean School we are aiming to provide supportive steps to aid the journey. Research shows us that a child reaches their full potential when both school and home have strong connections; we are hoping to further strengthen the link for our Year 11 students at this crucial time of the year.

The evening will be taking place on Thursday 17th September; 6.15pm arrive in the hall, for 6.30pm start until 8.35pm. The evening is intended to get parents and children working together so please encourage your child to attend with you.

In order to arrange resources and refreshments, please could you email school@varndean.co.uk or leave a message with reception by Tuesday 15th September 2015. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us at school.

Latin and Classical Civilisation at Varndean School

In association with Classics for All, will be offering Latin from Thursday 17th September 2015! We will follow the Cambridge Latin Course, a GCSE level course that is recognised world-wide as the leading beginner’s course for Latin.

Lessons will take place after school on Thursdays for one hour per week and will be offered as a two-year course for Years 7, 8 and 9. Classes will be small and there will be examined units provided by the WJEC exam board, which are recognised as part of the National Qualifications Framework and carry points consistent with GCSE.

The course will be very well resourced, with textbooks, e-learning materials and out-of-school learning opportunities.                      latin image

So why study Latin?

  • enhance your understanding of English grammar and expand your vocabulary
  • unlock other modern foreign languages
  • develop problem solving skills and encourage logical and methodical thinking
  • understand inscriptions and mottos
  • get insight into the technical vocabulary of the medical and legal professions and the hard sciences

The course

We begin our journey first by travelling back almost 2000 years, to a time when the Romans controlled much of Europe. Our studies allow us to explore and engage with all aspects of this civilisation.

The stories we read and translate provide a familiar and continuous thread; each in full colour throughout, with a clear layout of contextual pictures. All stories are also accompanied with new vocabulary and a gradual increase of grammar skills.

The course includes a full explanation of language and grammar, supplemented by comprehension questions and practice exercises. Study is fully integrated, with constant consolidation of learning points.

Alongside the continuous acquisition and development of language skills, each stage of the course also explores a particular aspect of Roman civilisation, through primary source material. These include days In Theatro, a consideration of the lives of gladiators, an exploration of the culture of the public baths.

The impact of the Romans is still evident in our everyday lives and the archaeological and literary evidence is rich and fascinating.

Assessment

Core Latin Language is a compulsory unit. This is examined in the summer term and carries two-thirds of your final grade.

The remaining one-third of your final grade may be taken in either: Roman Civilisation or Additional Latin Language.

Note: there is no ‘speaking’ exam.

Please see the slides below for full details including breakdown of the course content, or contact Ms Hawkins in the Languages Department.

Roald DahlSeptember is not only the month we return to school, but it is also the birth month of the great writer Roald Dahl. Born on the 13th in 1916, Roald Dahl went on to become a writer for both children and adults. At Varndean, we can think of no better way to celebrate the great writer’s birthday than with a visit to the library! Not only can students check out the Roald Dahl display and perhaps re-acquaint themselves with old friends like Matilda or even Mary Maloney, they can also browse our wide selection of books. Apart from being one of the best hobbies, research shows reading helps our understanding in subjects like Maths and Science! Staff at Varndean will continue to share what they are reading this year with ‘I am reading signs’. Parents and students are invited to share what they are reading by tweeting us @varndeanbooks

Celebrate Roald Dahl month with lots of reading – enjoy!
